Samsung is the undisputed
king of Android handsets in the market these days. Its Galaxy series of
smartphones and tablets have almost filled the space and rightly so. It offers
quality and provides value that only a few seem to replicate. The Samsung
Galaxy Note 10.1 is the newest addition to the Galaxy line- up and it is
undoubtedly one of the best tablets around. Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 price
is approximated at Rs. 49,990. Tablet price, in general, can go from Rs.
2,499 to Rs. 49,990. But the million bucks question is: can Samsung’s latest
addition beat Sony's much- hyped and water resistant Xperia Tablet Z? Here,
we put them into a head- to- head battle. Let's find out the winner.
Design
Samsung, with Samsung Galaxy
Note 10.1, has finally ditched the slippery plastic casing and this new tablet
has faux leather back with fake stitching at the edges. It has raised patterns
over it, which ensures a firm grip. It is thick at 8.9mm and feels a little
heftier at 597g. When it comes to looks, Sony Xperia Tablet Z doesn't try too
hard and there are no fancy bells and whistles around here. It is a simple
black rectangular device. But hell, what an amazing rectangle it is! The front
made from toughened glass which is scratch resistant and highly glossy. It is
the thinnest tablet available in the market. You'll just start gushing about
how amazingly thin this tablet is. It measures only 6.9mm (0.27 inches) and it
weighs at only 495g.
Display
The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1
has an LCD display. Yep, you read that correctly. A TFT one at that and the
resolution is underwhelming at 1280 x 800 pixels. But it's still got a vibrant
display with quite decent viewing angles. It just lacks the X-factor that we've
come to expect from Samsung. On the other hand, Sony Xperia Tablet Z sports a
full- HD display on the screen size of 10.1 inches. It gives a resolution of
1200 x 1920 pixels with a pixel density of 224 ppi. It is not the sharpest of displays
but it still excels here with its intelligent screen processing technology.
Processors
The Samsung Galaxy Note10.1
is powered by 1.4 GHz quad core Exynos with 2GB RAM whereas Sony Xperia Tablet
Z is powered by 1.5 GHz Qualcomm APQ8064 + MDM9215M Quad Core with a standard
2GB RAM.
Interface and
Performance
There is no Android 4.1 Jelly
Bean OS. It is just the heavily modified version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream
Sandwich. Overall, Samsung's Android overlay is impressive. It enables you to
take on two things at once (the 2GB RAM takes care of all that) and there are
some funky options that claim to make your life easier. The Sony Xperia Tablet
Z sails on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean OS. It is not the latest version, but the
update is on the roll. Sony Xperia Tablet Z has a better download speed at
42Mbps whereas the Samsung Note has a download speed of 21Mbps.
Camera
You would look like a moron
if you base your tablet- buying on the camera capabilities of the tablet. Using
a camera on a 10 inch tablet would be out- and- about atrocious! Having said
that, the camera on Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is quite good which is a good 5-
megapixels complete with an LED flash. And this camera is a marked improvement
in the tablets. On the other hand, Sony Xperia Tablet Z has an 8.1 megapixels
camera on the rear and it also has secondary camera of 2.2 megapixels. And the
camera does a good job. But mind it, taking pictures on a tablet won' be a good
idea.
Verdict
The signature Note from
Samsung comes at a price tag that can actually make a hole in your pockets. At
this price, it costs higher than what other brands like Apple, Microsoft and
other manufacturers have to offer. If you don't find a stylus very important,
then this premium tablet also won't be important to you. But if you prefer the
feel of a stylus rather than the touch of the glass against your fingertips,
then the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 might be the tablet you've been looking for.
Sony Xperia Tablet Z is one
of the most beautiful devices out there, thanks to its design and weight. Also,
there are features on Xperia Tablet Z that you won't find anywhere else such as
waterproofing. It can connect to a PS3 controller which makes it a delight for
all you gamers and makes it an ace “gaming device”.
